Four decorating and entertaining tips for the holidays

raindeerDecorating your condo or house for Christmas doesn’t have to be complicated. Entertaining is easy, so long as you think ahead. Here are four tips:

Start with a color palette:  Decorator friends of mine tell me dark colors (Chocolate brown, Plum, Deep red) are still popular. Accent your color palette with a metallic like copper or pewter. Whatever you choose, stick with it – the floral arrangement, the giveaways as your guests leave must not clash with the overall color theme.

Invest in white tableware: There is a lot of color at Christmastime already in your home and on your table. White plates contrast nicely with the surroundings and make the food stand out.

Consider the five senses: Decorating tends to be visual, the choice of food and drink critical, but don’t forget about setting the mood with perhaps Christmas Jazz on the stereo and lighting the fireplace if you have one. Candles are made for the Christmas holidays too.

Invite guests based on the available space: Especially if you live in a condo, you have to consider how many people can comfortable hang out in your living room, sit around your dining room table. Is your kitchen big enough to prepare all the food at the right time? You can also turn a dinner party into a party by asking the bulk of your guest to arrive in time for dessert and stay for drinks.
